Riky Rick’s R60k statue has been destroyed

A statue that was meant to celebrate the life of Riky Rick has been destroyed after it attracted criticism from the family and some fans. The real-life wax statue was premiered by KZN-based artist Lungelo Gumede over the weekend.

The artists had hoped his R60 000 art piece would be welcomed by the nation and Makhadi’s family. It will come as shock to iHarare readers to find out that Riky Rick’s statues has been destroyed.

This was not the case however as the Makhado family told him it was too early to reveal Riky Rick’s statue as they were still in mourning. Riky Rick’s brother, Themba had previously told Lungelo to not allow people to take pictures with the wax figure. This seemed to have fallen on deaf eyes as more and more pictures of people taking selfies with Riky Ricks’s statue emerged. This angered the Makhado’s as they said Lungelo was directly profiting from the statue, although the viewing is free.

The bad press forced Lungelo to get rid of Riky Rick’s statue and completely destroy it. “It cost me about R60 000 to make this statue. I made it out of love for Rick Rick and art. I felt threatened and couldn’t take it anymore. So to stop the threats, I decided to destroy the statue. It took me about a week to make it and only a few minutes to destroy it,” says Lungelo.
