A multi-truck collision on the N3 highway near Lion Park has brought Pietermaritzburg bound traffic to a complete standstill this Monday morning.
Emergency services, including ALS Paramedics and the fire department, are currently on-site managing a complex recovery operation involving three heavy-duty vehicles.
Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics confirmed that rescue teams are working under high pressure to extricate one driver from the wreckage.
The individual is receiving medical care inside the cabin while the fire department uses specialised equipment to free him.
Two other patients, who sustained moderate injuries, are being treated at the scene.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate has urged motorists to exercise extreme vigilance as heavy backups continue to grow.
Sindi Msimang, spokesperson for the inspectorate, advised drivers to avoid the area entirely if possible while authorities clear the debris and move the heavy-duty vehicles.
Recovery efforts are expected to take several hours due to the scale of the wreckage.
Motorists currently on the N3 are being diverted onto the R103 to bypass the closure, though significant delays are reported on all alternative routes.
