Following many deadly accidents on the N2 between Mthatha and Dutywa in the Eastern Cape, religious groups held a cleansing ceremony to make the road safer.

The event was organised by the Mbhashe local municipality, Sanral, the Moral Regeneration Movement, and the Community Safety Forum.

They aimed to chase away any evil spirits believed to cause accidents near Nhywarha village.

A 2023 report says the N2 between Dutywa and Mthatha is the second-most dangerous road in the country.

On Tuesday, religious leaders from various faiths prayed and performed rituals on the N2 to remove harmful spirits.

Mbhashe council speaker Babalwa Majavu said honouring the spirits of those who died in that area was necessary.

“We decided to invite leaders from all religions to pray for the spirits of those who died here, hoping this cleansing will reduce accidents on this part of the N2,” said Majavu.

Mbhashe mayor Samkelo Janda said this isn’t the first time they’ve held such a prayer to reduce road accidents.

“We’ve done this before with the [EC] Department of Transport and various religious groups in another part of the N2. After that prayer, accidents decreased. We believe this ceremony will have the same effect,” said Janda.
