‘Rele Mofokeng made a huge mistake by declining Rulani’s offer’

Former Orlando Pirates winger Lebohang Mokoena feels Relebohile Mofokeng made a mistake by declining Rulani Mokwena’s offer to join MC Alger.

The 39-year-old coach revealed that he was interested in bringing the 21-year-old Bafana Bafana attacker to Algeria.

“So, example I know the fans want Mofokeng,” said Rulani as per iDiski Times.

“I know this and believe me I want Mofokeng as well. He’s a South African, a player that I speak to also about certain things in South African football but it not a transfer that, not just from a financial perspective because I can tell you the player has had many, many offers and has set his sights on going to Europe.

“So, I can talk about it because it is just an example that the club is ambitious, the club has explored that possibility. But the player has no ambitions to play in Africa.

Rulani wanted Mofokeng at MC Alger

“So, it’s not a lack of ambition from the President of the club.”

“For Rele, I don’t think it was a wise move to decline such an offer. We spoke earlier this season, even last season that teams like Al Ahly and MC Alger will come knocking and the money is good as well,” Mokwena added.

Ex-Pirates star Cheeseboy Mokoena felt Mofokeng made a bad decision to turn down Mokwena’s offer to move to North Africa.

“It has been happening for a while that North African teams have been coming to South Africa to get our players

“It gave players more opportunities to win the Champions League and play in the Club World Cup,” he said.

The former Bafana Bafana winger said Rulani would have improved Mofokeng and get him ready for Europe.

“Rele is still small in stature, yes, he is a quality player but there are aspects of his game he needs to improve on if he’s gonna make a move to Europe.

“If I were him, I was going to take the offer and work with coach Rulani as he understands you as a local player and knows where he wants him to play,” Mokoena added.

“For me, I’d say it was a bad decision in terms of declining that move.”

Mofokeng’s move to MC Alger is unlikely to happen, but this won’t stop Rulani from trying to poach a local player to North Africa. He recruited Thambinkosi Lorch from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2025.

Should Mofokeng leave for North Africa?
