Multi-award winning maskandi singer, Khuzani Mpungose, recused himself from taking part in the African Icons Tribute Concert and committed to repaying R57, 500 to prevent financial loss for event organisers.

The iconic event that took place on Heritage Day was organised by award-winning music producer and composer, Lebohang ‘Lebo M’ Morake. The event was to honour the late Dr Joseph Shabalala, founder of the world-renowned group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It boasted with a hot line-up that included Thee Legacy, Mnqobi Yazo, Kelly Khumalo, Boity, Phila Dlozi, Big Zulu, Blaq Diamond, Lebo M and Joseph’s son, Nkosinathi Shabalala, with Minnie Dlamini as the host.

Hours before the event took place, a statement was issued that certain members of the Dr Joseph Shabalala Foundation had filed an urgent application to stop the show. The application was struck off the court roll with costs, allowing the concert to proceed as planned.

Lebo M said in response: “It is deeply sad that some members of the Dr Joseph Shabalala Foundation attempted what can only be described as a heist through the courts and even worse, involved a vulnerable widow on a day meant to honour the memory of their father.

“Our efforts in producing this inaugural special event, with zero sponsorship, are rooted in love, legacy and respect. This victory affirms that no sabotage or falsehood will silence our mission to honour my hero, Dr Shabalala, and to fulfil the request of our client and friend, Nkosinathi Shabalala.”

According to TshisaLIVE, the Ijele hitmaker sided with the family and phoned the organisers in the morning of the event, and let them know that he is pulling out from the show.

“Following the advice of my elders, I have been asked not to participate due to family-related concerns surrounding the event. Out of respect for their guidance, I must honour this request,” he said.

“I fully understand the inconvenience this may cause, and I wish to assure you that I will take full responsibility. As such, I commit to refunding R57,500 to ensure no financial loss on your side.

“This was a very difficult decision to make, as I value both our relationship and the effort invested in this event. I truly appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.”
