  • President Cyril Ramaphosa has slammed US President Donald Trump for claiming South Africa will be excluded from the 2026 G20 summit in Miami.
  • Trump threatened to cut funding and subsidies to South Africa, calling the country “not worthy of membership anywhere” in a post on Truth Social.
  • Ramaphosa labelled Trump’s remarks as insulting and based on misinformation, saying South Africa is a sovereign democracy that will not tolerate demeaning statements from other nations.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has hit back at American President Donald Trump following his negative remarks about South Africa’s participation in the 2026 G20.

This comes after Trump posted a scathing statement on Truth Social on Wednesday, 26 November, where he said South Africa will not be invited to attend the 2026 G20 summit which is set to be held in Miami, Florida.

Trump also threatened to cut funding to South Africa.

“South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

In a statement released on Thursday, 27 November 2025, Ramaphosa called Trump’s rant regrettable and said South Africa does not appreciate insults from another country.

“South Africa is a sovereign constitutional democratic country and does not appreciate insults from another country about its membership and worth in participating in global platforms.

“South Africa respects the sovereignty of all countries and will never insult or demean another country or its standing and worthiness in the community of nations,” said Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa also criticised Trump for continuing to spread misinformation about South Africa, despite his efforts to improve relations between the two countries.

“It is regrettable that despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President Ramaphosa and his administration to reset the diplomatic relationship with the US, President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country.”
