  • President Cyril Ramaphosa conveyed his condolences and called for a thorough investigation.
  • Rescue teams are still searching for three missing workers.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his deepest condolences to the families of six construction workers who died after a double-storey building collapsed in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, on Monday, 02 March 2026.

The building caved in while workers were on site, killing six people and trapping several others.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown.

The President said he hopes investigations will provide answers to grieving families and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“An inquiry will help to prevent a recurrence of a tragedy such as this. The President also appreciates the urgency with which rescue teams are undertaking their urgent tasks,” said Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Meanwhile, rescue workers continue searching for three people who are still unaccounted for.

One survivor told Kaya News he is struggling to come to terms with the incident, saying he was working in the basement when the first floor collapsed.

Authorities remain on site as investigations continue.
