President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Elon Musk at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss investments in South Africa, including the possibility of making Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, available nationwide.
Starlink could help bring high-speed internet to rural areas that lack access and boost the economy.
At the meeting, Ramaphosa spoke about South Africa’s goals of creating jobs, reducing poverty, and achieving inclusive growth.
The government has set a target of attracting R2 trillion (about $100 billion) in investments by 2028.
At the SA-US Interactive Business Forum in New York, Ramaphosa discussed South Africa’s efforts to improve its economy, build infrastructure, and make the country more business-friendly.
He said: “South Africa intends to stay the course on the structural economic reform process, on scaling up investment in key infrastructure, and on improving the business operating environment.”
Ramaphosa highlighted that South Africa and Africa are excellent places for investment, particularly in financial services, energy, healthcare, mining, and technology.
“Our efforts to promote South Africa as a favourable investment destination continue to yield positive benefits,” he said.
With ample opportunities for clean energy, Ramaphosa believes South Africa can lead the way in the green energy movement.
