Ramaphosa hails Peter Mutharika’s victory in Malawi polls

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his “warm congratulations” to Professor Peter Mutharika following his recent electoral victory in Malawi’s general elections on 16 September 2025.
In a statement released on Thursday, President Ramaphosa wished Professor Mutharika “every success” as he prepares to take on the “weighty responsibility” conferred upon him by the Malawian people.
South Africa is keen to “continue its close collaboration” with the new administration, working to strengthen the “enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity” between the two nations, which Ramaphosa deemed “essential for the mutual benefit” and regional integration.
The South African President also commended the Malawian people for their “active and peaceful participation” in the election, noting that their commitment to democratic principles sets a “positive example” for the region.
Furthermore, Ramaphosa paid a heartfelt tribute to the outgoing leader, President Lazarus Chakwera, for his “dedicated leadership.”
He noted that President Chakwera “meaningfully strengthened bilateral cooperation” and was a committed advocate for regional unity, specifically highlighting his instrumental contributions to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and his work as Chairman of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
South Africa said it “eagerly anticipates working with the incoming Government” to advance shared aspirations for the wellbeing of both citizens and the broader African community.
