President Cyril Ramaphosa

The president has been reacting to the Enyobeni tavern tragedy in the Eastern Cape where 21 young people were found dead inside the venue at East London’s Scenery Park.

While circumstances surrounding their deaths are still not clear, it’s understood the lifeless bodies of the 12 boys and nine girls were found lying across the floor and on tables of the venue.

Post-mortem examinations and toxicology tests will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Spokesperson for the president Vincent Magwenya says Ramaphosa has conveyed his condolences to the children’s families.

“The president is, however, also concerned about the reported circumstances under which such young people were gathered at a venue which, on the face of it, should be off limits to persons under the age of 18.

“The president expects the law to take its course following investigations into the tragedy.”
