The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has ordered that Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, an alleged criminal mastermind, remain in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru Maximum Security Prison.
This temporary relocation from his usual facility is intended to facilitate legal consultations until his next court appearance on 13 May.
Matlala faces serious charges of fraud and corruption concerning a R360 million police tender awarded in 2024.
He is not standing trial alone; twelve high-ranking police officers and the director of Medicare24 Tshwane District have also been charged in connection with the controversial contract.
In December last year, Matlala had been transferred to the high-security Ebongweni Super Maximum Correctional facility in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.
However, the court’s recent decision ensures he remains accessible to his legal team in Pretoria as the complex proceedings surrounding the multimillion-rand tender continue.
