The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has set aside over R16-million to help reduce crime in the city, which is struggling with gang violence and high murder rates.

Buyelwa Mafaya, the municipality’s Budget and Treasury MCM, announced this during a council meeting on Tuesday.

She said: “We are answering the call to take serious action against crime. The lack of resources has been a big problem, but this funding will make a big difference.”

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently visited the city, holding meetings in crime hotspots and announcing the deployment of special police units to start working in the affected areas immediately.

Metro police commissioner Andrew Moses said the police are adopting an innovative approach to tackling crime.

The plan includes using CCTV cameras, shot-spotter technology to detect gunshots, mobile surveillance vehicles, and increasing police presence in high-crime areas.

“We are pleased with the budget support. It will really help us make the city safer,” said Moses.

Acting city manager Mandla George added that the city plans to restart its CCTV camera system.

“We have checked the cameras, and they are still working. We are now in the process of hiring a company to manage the system,” he said.
