A heart-wrenching incident unfolded near Laudium, Pretoria, where a shack fire tragically claimed the lives of five children.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 4:26 am, which engulfed six shacks in the Itireleng settlement.
The children, aged one to seven, were reportedly left alone overnight by their mothers in the shack.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and swiftly battled the flames.
Once the fire was extinguished, the devastating discovery of the burnt bodies of the five children was made.
Two boys aged two, four, and six, along with two girls aged one and five months, were the young victims, all belonging to two sisters, as confirmed by Thabo Mabaso, a spokesperson for Tshwane emergency services.
Shockingly, the sisters were accused of leaving their children unsupervised in the shack while they went to a nearby bar.
Following this revelation, the police arrested the sisters for questioning. An ongoing investigation is underway to determine the cause of the tragic fire.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring children are always under the care of responsible adults in safe environments.
