A job interview is a two-way conversation. While employers ask questions to determine whether you’re the right fit for the role, you should also ask thoughtful questions to learn more about the company, the position and what it would be like to work there.

Asking insightful questions shows that you’ve done your research, are genuinely interested in the opportunity and are thinking carefully about your career. It can also help you decide whether the role aligns with your goals and values.

Why asking questions matters

Many candidates make the mistake of saying, “I don’t have any questions.” However, asking relevant questions can leave a positive impression on the interviewer and provide valuable information that may not have been covered during the interview.

According to the Harvard Business Review, asking thoughtful questions demonstrates curiosity, preparation and engagement. Meanwhile, career experts at Indeed note that it also helps candidates evaluate whether the company is the right fit for them.

Questions to ask about the role

These questions can help you understand what the position involves and what success looks like.

  • What does a typical day in this role look like?
  • What are the biggest priorities for the person who joins this position?
  • How will my performance be measured?
  • What challenges is the team currently facing?
  • What would success in this role look like after the first six months?

Questions about the team

Learning about your future colleagues and manager can help you understand the workplace culture.

  • Can you tell me more about the team I’ll be working with?
  • How would you describe the management style?
  • How does the team collaborate on projects?
  • What qualities do your top-performing employees have?

Questions about company culture

Company culture can have a significant impact on your job satisfaction.

  • How would you describe the company culture?
  • What do employees enjoy most about working here?
  • How does the company support employee wellbeing?
  • Are there opportunities to get involved in company initiatives or community projects?

Questions about growth and development

If you’re looking to build your career, these questions can help you assess future opportunities.

  • What opportunities are available for professional development?
  • Does the company provide training or mentorship programmes?
  • How do employees typically progress within the organisation?
  • Are there opportunities to take on new responsibilities over time?

Questions about the hiring process

Before leaving the interview, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask about the next steps.

  • What are the next stages of the recruitment process?
  • When can I expect to hear back?
  • Is there anything else I can provide to support my application?

Questions to avoid

While it’s important to ask questions, some are better saved until later in the hiring process.

Avoid asking:

  • Questions that are clearly answered on the company’s website.
  • Questions focused only on salary and benefits during an initial interview (unless the interviewer raises the topic first).
  • Questions that suggest you haven’t researched the company.
  • Negative questions about former employees or workplace conflicts.

Final thoughts

Preparing a few thoughtful questions before your interview can help you stand out from other candidates while giving you the information you need to make an informed career decision. Remember to listen carefully during the interview, as some of your planned questions may already be answered.

The goal is to have a meaningful conversation that demonstrates your interest, professionalism and enthusiasm for the role.
