Roger De Sa could be South Africa’s only representative at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with the South African set to be appointed along with Carlos Queiroz at Iran.
Iran qualified for the World Cup under Dragan Skocic, but the Croatian’s future with Iran is on thin ice following Mehdi Taj being voted as president of the Iran Football Federation.
Taj had stated during his campaign that it was his intention to re-appoint Queiroz as manager of Iran if he was to be elected. The Portuguese coach is Iran’s longest-serving manager having led from 2011 to 2019.
He and De Sa have been available since vacating their roles at Egypt after losing in the Afcon Final to Senegal and missing out on the World Cup after losing to the same opponents in the final round of qualifiers. Both the final and the qualifiers were lost via penalty shootouts.
Iranian state media are now suggesting that Queiroz could be appointed by Iran by the end of the week, and some are reporting he has already signed, and De Sa is expected to be named his assistant, the same role he fulfilled at Egypt.
