ENHLE MBALI MLOTSHWA CLOSES SA FASHION WEEK

Actrss Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa showcased her Essie Apparel AW25 collection on the last day, and last show of SA Fashion Week on Saturday 28 September. She answered a few questions about her new collection in an exclusive interview with The South African.

Q&A WITH ENHLE MBALI MLOTSHWA

What was the inspiration behind your collection?

The inspiration behind the show was a play on the word Amazulu translated “the heavens”. It is derived from the Zulu nation, which ties in Africa and African traditions modernised by The House of Essie. It was a jovial piece of art showing how our spirit dance in life, how we live in colour and light of our spirit that continuously shines through our angels and God.”

What was your vision for the models on the runway?

My vision for the models on the runway was what would Africa look like in the Stone Age?  So I mimicked animal hide into different textiles, we used heavy beading as a reminder of old culture and keeping the craft alive.

What do you think sets Essie Apparel apart?

What sets Essie Apparel apart from a lot of brands is a simplistic interpretation of style meeting fashion in the crossroad of Couture.

That’s a perfect recipe for a brand that’s won international design awards.

How did it feel close to SA Fashion Week?

I was sick the whole week leading up to SA Fashion Week but I could not let that stop me, I had the thought of not showing and doing it the next season as I was pushing myself on a daily basis, but my guardian angels and ancestors carried me through.  I’m actually glad I showcased this season and I think this show will go down as probably one of my best.

As an artist I am sensitive about my work, so seeing the reception was absolutely humbling.
