There’s a hint of a huge possibility that veteran defender Onismor Bhasera might retire at the end of the season at SuperSport United following his sterling work at the club, according to the club CEO Stan Matthews.
If Bhasera does retire, Matthews said they will create a spot for him in the club just like they did for Jabu Maluleke, who was brought back recently as a set piece coach, Grant Johnson, and Thabo September.
And when he decides to go for coaching qualifications, Matthews said he will pay for his tuition fees.
The 36-year-old recently graduated from the PSL’s Player Transition Programme under Gordon Institute of Business in Pretoria alongside his teammate Siyabonga Nhlapo.
Bash, as he is known, joined the club ahead of the 2016/17 season from Bidvest Wits and this season is in his seventh campaign with the Tshwane giants.
He has won three trophies – two MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup.
After Ronwen Williams left at the beginning of the season to join Mamelodi Sundowns in a bigger money move, Hunt did not look any further and appointed Bhasera as his captain.
He has featured in 10 matches in all competitions, scoring once which came against his former club Maritzburg United.
With the season brought to a halt due to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he has helped SuperSport to sit third in the DStv Premiership table with 21 points after 12 matches.
“He’s probably going to retire at the end of the season, maybe, unless he feels he’s got one more year left in him or something,” said Matthews to the iDiski Times.
“He just graduated from the player transition program very, very well and someone who will not hesitate in the future when he gets his coaching qualifications which I asked to pay for him as a thank you to the club as a dedicated service that will get him qualified as a coach.
“For sure Bash will end up in my system somewhere. Great leader, great character, great personality, tremendous work ethic, and discipline, wonderful role model – just exactly what the club stands for.
“Like Jabu Maluleke, my former player. Thabo September who has taken the DStv Diski Challenge, my former player. Andre Arendse is my former player, Grant Johnson is my former (are all working at the club).”
Bhasera, who has also played for Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows in the past, has featured in 165 matches for the club, scoring two goals in the process.
