Proteas brace for heavyweight Test battle against Australia

The Proteas are set for a major cricketing showdown this weekend when they open their three-Test series against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban.

The first Test gets underway on Friday, 9 October, with the action continuing through the weekend before the match concludes on Tuesday, 13 October, weather and the state of the game permitting.

Play is scheduled to start at 09:30 South African time, with the Proteas facing one of the toughest challenges on home soil against the Australians.

For South Africa, the series provides an opportunity to make a strong statement in the longest format and test their depth against a formidable Australian side.

One of the biggest talking points heading into the opening Test is the fitness of fast-bowling spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who remains in contention despite a hamstring injury.

Rabada’s presence would provide a major boost to the Proteas attack, particularly against an Australian batting line-up that will be expected to put the home bowlers under pressure.

Another major storyline is the possible return of Anrich Nortje to Test cricket.

The express fast bowler is pushing for a place in the squad after being away from the Test format for almost four years. His potential comeback would add further pace and experience to South Africa’s bowling attack.

The Durban Test is therefore likely to attract plenty of attention as South Africa look to make home advantage count against Australia.

While the men’s Test series will dominate the headlines, domestic women’s cricket will also be in the spotlight this weekend.

Titans Women will face DP World Lions Women on Saturday, adding another important fixture to the South African cricket calendar.

With the Proteas taking centre stage at Kingsmead, cricket supporters are in for a busy weekend as South Africa begins its latest Test battle against Australia.
