A well known KwaZulu-Natal taxi driver who campaigned for the MK party ahead of the elections is now jobless, in hiding and fearing for his life.

Godole Mdletshe made a huge impact in the province convincing sections of the taxi industry in Roodepoort and informal traders to back Jacob Zuma’s new party.

In the process of electioneering and criticising other parties, including the ruling party, Mdletshe received death threats that forced him to give up his job.

He told Scrolla.Africa that it was clear that a hit had been ordered against him.

Mdletshe however rejected the claim that he was overlooked in the MK party in favour of disgraced former judge John Hlophe, who is now MK leader in parliament.

“They even said that I’m heartbroken because the MK party never deployed me to Parliament. This is a pure lie. I never joined MK for positions. They never promised me anything.”

He said he was still an MK activist and was still working for the party.

“I campaigned for MK because I wanted the party to liberate the taxi industry that is always overlooked by our government. I wanted MK to liberate those women who are street vendors and happened to be abused by city police everywhere. Even today I’m still working for the MK party as a full member,” said Mdletshe.

During the campaign he was mobilising the taxi industry to vote for MK, allegedly in exchange for a promise that he would go to Parliament and represent the party.

Mdletshe is originally from uMsinga in the KZN Midlands.

“I was facing death threats because of my vocal stance against the ANC. As we speak I am in hiding and I survive through donations from party members,” said Godole.

MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said that Mdletshe never had ambitions to go to Parliament and he was never promised any deployment.

“Even if Godole was on the list he would have been on the KZN list for the Legislature. He would make a good impact on the Department of Transport because of his understanding of the taxi industry,” said Ndlela.
