Princess Phumzile Buthelezi, the eldest daughter of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, says she is being targeted by criminals who wrongly believe she inherited millions of rands from her father.

Speaking at a Women’s Month event in Ulundi, Buthelezi, 71, shared that she has had to leave her home and now stays at a B&B because criminals have repeatedly broken into and damaged her house in the B North section of Ulundi.

“I had to leave my home because criminals keep breaking in,” Buthelezi said. “They recently stole all my suitcases and damaged the roof and bathroom. I don’t know what they want because my father, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, didn’t leave me anything.

“I have no money, not even a small shop. I’m just as poor as anyone else,” said the princess, who cried as she spoke about her difficult situation.

Prince Buthelezi, the traditional prime minister to the Zulu nation, passed away on 9 September last year.

The family has never publicly discussed how much wealth he left in his will.

At the event, Ulundi deputy mayor Gabi Madela encouraged women to support each other during tough times.

“Whether we are in powerful positions or not, we as women need to help each other. If one of us is going through a hard time, we must support her,” said Madela.

“Let’s not look down on one another. Those in power should not undermine those less fortunate because we all need each other as women.”
