Pretoria school clears 12 learners of racism

Twelve white learners from Pretoria High School for Girls, including eight prefects, have been found not guilty of racism after a hearing.

Acting principal Danica Stoffberg shared this in a letter on Friday, saying the girls would keep their prefect positions.

“This process was fair and transparent. We have lessons to learn and must work together to create an environment where every learner feels valued and empowered to succeed,” she said.

The hearing was led by a three-member panel, including an advocate who is part of the school governing body.

The learners were suspended after a planned protest on 19 July, which came after allegations of racial comments, micro-aggressions, and complaints about black learners in a WhatsApp group composed of white pupils.

Additionally, principal Phillipa Erasmus was placed on a 90-day suspension by the Gauteng Education Department, depending on an investigation into claims that she ignored student complaints.

This decision followed a visit by Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane on Tuesday.

The department also suspended a black matric pupil after a video of her making racially charged statements went viral.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that the pupil was suspended and will face a disciplinary process.
