A pregnant woman suffered a pelvic injury and sustained head injuries after an ambulance crashed on the way to the hospital

On November 16, a pregnant woman was inside an ambulance operated by the Free State Department of Health as it travelled from Steynsrus to Kroonstad.

On a section of the R76 where there are road construction projects, the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The driver of the ambulance was released from Boitumelo Hospital without suffering any injuries, according to provincial health spokesman Mondli Mvambi, but his fellow paramedic suffered a leg fracture and was afterwards sent to Kroon Hospital in Kroonstad.

Mvambi has verified that the expectant mother delivered a healthy baby girl after being taken to the hospital.

“She is stable and fully conscious. She suffered a pelvic injury and sustained head injuries. She remains under observation at Boitumelo Hospital while the clinical specialist team is determining the next appropriate course of action,”

“The investigation of the accident points to a tyre burst on the right front wheel of the ambulance, leading to the driver losing control of the ambulance which eventually capsized.”said Mvambi.
