Dates for pre-trial hearings in the Vusimuzi Cat Matlala attempted murder case are expected to be discussed next week, following the Johannesburg High Court’s postponement of the matter on Friday.
The court said this was to allow case management to deal with evidence and address outstanding disputes.
The alleged underground kingpin, with five co-accused, including his wife, is facing charges linked to an alleged hit on his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane.
During the court appearance, Matlala’s lawyer Anneline Van den Heever clashed with the State over access to crucial documents and her client’s ability to consult in privacy.
Van den Heever also indicated to the court that bail on new facts for Matlala is imminent.
She said this would assist in ensuring proper consultation with her client, who is currently detained at Ebongweni Super Max prison.
Despite correspondence with the National Commissioner of Correctional Services confirming access, Van den Heever told the court that engaging with Matlala at a prison in KZN is a nightmare.
“It also impacts my client’s rights to bring the bail application based on new facts,” said Van den Heever.
Matlala, who was dressed in a navy-blue suit, appeared in good spirits as he engaged with his wife, occasionally smiling while proceedings were underway.
