Poor run gets Leopards coach suspicious of ‘African magic |

The recent poor run and missing clear scoring chances have left Black Leopards assistant coach Morgan Shivambu suspicious that they could be victims of ‘African Magic’.

Shivambu was in charge during the 2-1 defeat by Platinum City Rovers over the weekend in the absence of suspended coach Joel Masutha.

The result saw Leopards demoted to the bottom of the log after six rounds of matches. They have collected three out of a possible 18 points.

“I don’t know but as Africans sometimes you tend to believe there is something there,” Shivambu told journalists after the match.

“You get a chance and it hits the bar twice so something is not right there. Matimu (Tshabalala) last minute chance, there was no goalkeeper and everyone was sure that it was a goal but it went wide,” he added.

“As usual, we have been playing games like this creating chances but we are not scoring. It’s a song of the day, at training we have been finishing but came the game we are missing easy scoring opportunities.”

League position concerns

Shivambu said their log position is also a big concern for everyone at the club.

“We are very (worried), our aim is not to be in this league. It’s to compete to be number one but the way things are going obviously we are under pressure.

“As Black Leopards we don’t just play to be in the league, we play to go to the DStv Premiership so we will fight as long as the guys don’t look down. The way we are playing everyone is impressive but the only thing is scoring those goals,” said Shivambu.

Leopards next League match

Leopards will face rivals Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in a Vhembe derby on Wednesday, 12 October. Shivambu has also pointed out how they have struggled to get new Under 23 players to comply with the league rules.

“We are utilizing our experience, the only challenge for this season is our understanding that 23s, the ones that were playing last season went out of that age bracket that’s why now we have to adjust so that we can comply with the rules which obviously the boys are coming from the lower leagues, so sometimes it takes time.”
