The Polokwane municipality has begun the legal process to terminate its partnership with DStv Premiership side Marumo Gallants, FARPost has learnt.
Gallants have been utilising the facilities at the municipality since buying their Premiership status in 2021.
The two parties entered into a three-season agreement with a clause requiring the Limpopo-based side to play 15 PSL matches at Peter Mokaba Stadium per season.
Gallants use the 2010 FIFA World Cup venue for free but share gate-takings with the municipality.
The club also registered the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg and Old Peter Mokaba in Polokwane as their alternative venues.
RELATIONSHIP BEYOND REPAIR
The relationship between the club and the municipality became sour when Gallants took their clasg against Kaizer Chiefs to Rustenburg in North West.
A match which is a huge income generator for the municipality, who inisist they run a loss when hosting other ‘small fixtures’.
This publication has gathered that there has been a formal communication from the municipality to the club indicating their intentions.
JOHN MPE REFUSES TO ENTERTAIN MARUMO GALLANTS ISSUE
When asked on the Gallants issue, executive mayor John Mpe declined to comment and would rather focus on the positives.
The positives being the newly announced three-seasons agreement that will see Kaizer Chiefs play some of their matches in Polokwane.
“I think let’s focus on Kaizer Chiefs. Let’s focus on the positives,” said Mpe.
“The positive is Kaizer Chiefs will be in town this weekend. As you know some of the clubs when they play here can only attract a few numbers but what excites us is the numbers that Chiefs will be bringing.
“What excited us more is that Sekhukhune who were playing their games in Gauteng, this is now their home. It’s not a home away from home, it’s their home. So what more would we want?.
“Let me also tell you that there are other clubs that have actually approached us. But what also excites us is that everybody agrees that the only time you get people to the stadium is when Kaizer Chiefs play.”
The latest developments could mean Gallants will have to play the rest of their matches in Rustenburg.
There has also been reports that they intend to take their CAF Confederations Cup matches to Dobsonville Stadium.
