A gas pipeline explosion at a nearby business site on Wednesday forced the closure of the SAPS Tshwane Training Academy and the evacuation of over 2,500 trainees.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe explained that the decision to evacuate the trainees was made after consulting experts. Also evacuated were SAPS trainers and members from various specialised units, including the Natjoints Coordination Centre.

“Although the training academy itself is not directly affected, the evacuation is a precautionary measure,” said Mathe.

“Experts are on-site working to contain the fire at the nearby business.”

A venue operational centre, led by Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, has been set up to manage the situation.

National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, stressed the importance of safety for all involved.

“This evacuation is a precaution to protect the lives of our members,” said Masemola.

He reassured the public that the police trainees and staff at the academy were safe.
