Police on high alert as Pirates and Sundowns clash in Durban

Police are on high alert in Durban as thousands of football supporters descend on Moses Mabhida Stadium for Saturday’s sold-out MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The highly anticipated showdown, scheduled for kick-off at 18:00 on October 10, comes amid security concerns following violent protests in Durban’s central business district earlier this week.

With the two Premiership giants battling for the lucrative top-eight competition trophy, authorities are expected to maintain a strong security presence to ensure the safety of supporters, players, team officials and members of the public.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has indicated that security measures have been put in place before, during and after the match.

Police have also cautioned against misleading social media posts suggesting that the final could be disrupted, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.

The security arrangements are particularly important given the expected large turnout at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where tickets for the blockbuster encounter have sold out.

Supporters of both teams are expected to create an electric atmosphere as Pirates seek another MTN8 title, while Sundowns look to add the prestigious trophy to their collection.

The match brings together two of South African football’s biggest clubs in a contest that promises high stakes both on and off the pitch.

Authorities will be hoping that the occasion passes peacefully, allowing supporters to enjoy the spectacle without incidents of violence or disorder.

Fans have been urged to cooperate with security personnel, follow instructions at stadium entrances and surrounding areas, and rely on official communication channels for updates.

With a trophy at stake and thousands of supporters expected in Durban, maintaining law and order will be as important as the action on the field.

The focus now shifts to Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Pirates and Sundowns will battle for MTN8 supremacy in what is expected to be one of the highlights of the South African football calendar.
