Unions have criticised Bheki Cele’s comment saying there will be no festive season leave for police officers

Police unions have denounced Police Minister Bheki Cele’s declaration that no police officers will take vacation time over the holiday season and have called it “an act of provocation.”

While supporting the police’s Safer Festive Season program, police unions argued that members who had requested leave in advance for the holiday season should be permitted to take their days off.

Thobakgale, the national spokeswoman for the SA Policing Union (Sapu), stated that the union was troubled by the minister’s statement.

The union asserted that Cele allegedly stated, when speaking at a gathering in Limpopo, that police officers would not be granted leave or holidays from December 15 to January 31.

“First, this is a clear act of provocation. Minister Cele has no role to play in the conditions of employment, let alone unilaterally changing them.”

“As we speak, members during the beginning of the year have submitted approved leave plans which include December, so we want to say to the minister of police that police officers who have leave planned for December will take their leave despite his utterances.” said Thobakgale,
