Police Minister Senzo Mchunu will travel to China next week to attend the Global Public Security Cooperation Forum.
He will meet with China’s Minister of Public Safety, Wang Xiaohong, to discuss how advanced technology can improve law enforcement in South Africa.
Mchunu wants to find new technologies that could help the police fight criminals better, especially crimes like extortion, hijacking, and murder, which are on the rise.
Recent crime statistics revealed there were 135 kidnapping cases for ransom in the first quarter of the year, with Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal being the worst-hit provinces.
Mchunu believes that modern crime needs modern solutions.
He has deployed a special task force in high-crime areas of Gauteng, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are investing in advanced tools to help improve investigations and respond faster to the crime,” Mchunu said.
He said technology can help track criminal activity, making it harder for criminals to escape.
Mchunu also wants to strengthen intelligence-gathering to better predict and prevent criminal activity.
He also wants to involve properly trained private security companies to help tackle crime.
