Gauteng police have launched a manhunt following the killing of Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (NTA) chairperson, Thami Moyo, in Soweto.
Moyo (58) was driving along the Soweto Highway in Diepkloof on Thursday when he was allegedly ambushed by suspects travelling in two vehicles.Â
The attackers reportedly fired several shots, killing him instantly. The motive for the shooting has not yet been confirmed, though it is suspected to be linked to ongoing taxi violence.
Police have appealed to the public for information that could help track down the suspects.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy extended condolences to Moyo’s family, the NTA leadership, and the broader taxi industry.Â
She said she had engaged with Acting Police Minister Prof. Firoz Cachalia, who assured her that an investigation team had already been established.Â
Creecy urged calm and called for space to allow law enforcement to complete their work and bring those responsible to justice.
Thamsanqa Moyo, the chairperson of the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA), was fatally shot on the Soweto Highway earlier today.
According to GNTA spokesperson Theo Malele, Moyo was ambushed by unknown assailants who opened fire on him.
