  • Two teens aged 16 and 18 were arrested and taken into custody after allegedly attacking DA MPs, including Ian Cameron, in Philippi, Cape Town.
  • Cameron received stitches and has dental damage; Schickerling had a minor head injury; Gotsell was treated for injuries.
  • The suspects face attempted murder and hijacking charges, and a third arrest is expected.

Western Cape police have arrested two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, after they allegedly attacked Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Ian Cameron, along with two DA members during an attempted hijacking in Philippi, Cape Town, on Tuesday, 20 August.

According to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the 16-year-old suspect was arrested in Browns Farm in the early hours of Wednesday morning and has been charged.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old was arrested on Tuesday evening while seeking medical assistance at medical facility in Lentegeur.

“It is believed he was shot during the attack on the three victims when one of the vehicle occupants allegedly fired a shot in response to the attack. He is currently under police guard in hospital,” the statement reads.

Another arrest is expected, as the attack is believed to have been carried out by three male suspects.

The two suspects face charges of attempted murder and attempted hijacking.

This comes after Cameron and his DA colleagues, Nicholas Gotsell and Lisa-Maré Schickerling, were attacked following an official visit to the Philippi SAPS training academy on Tuesday.

They were in a car when three men threw bricks at them, smashing their windows at the corner of Eisleben and Govan Mbeki Roads.

Cameron has since indicated that he sustained some injuries, including a few stitches and dental damage, while Schickerling  had a minor head injury and Gotsell was receiving treatment.
