Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of police officer Nthabiseng Bridget Mosidi and taxi owner Nkosinathi Ndlela outside Kagiso police station on 22 August.
The arrests represent a breakthrough in solving the crime in what is believed to be an ongoing taxi turf war.
The four suspects, three of whom are relatives, are facing double murder charges, possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal possession of ammunition.
A blue Hyundai IX 35 without number plates was identified as the suspected getaway vehicle, and the police followed up with information that led to the men’s arrest.
The suspects were nabbed in the early hours of Friday at two different locations: Mindalore and Witpoortjie on the West Rand.
At one of the premises, police found three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 121 rounds of ammunition, 84 high-calibre rounds, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money.
Police officer Mosidi was sitting in the car of a taxi driver who had just appeared in the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court on charges of taxi-related violence when the duo was shot with a high-calibre rifle. They both died at the scene.
The slain taxi owner is said to be one of the 13 owners who were arrested in November 2023 for taxi violence-related crimes.
