Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly moved back to the summit of the Egyptian Premier League with a vital 3-0 win in their top of the table clash against Pyramids.
Pyramids, who started with Bafana Bafana forward Fagrie Lakay up-front came into the game leading the league with a single point but played one game more than the African Champions.
The opening half proved to be a rather dull affair as neither side looked to play their usual expansive game and no shots on target were recorded despite Ahly holding more than 60% of possession in front of their home supporters.
But in the opening two minutes of the second half, they found the opener through Mohamed Magdy Afsha as he profited from some calamitous defending to intercept a backpass and waltz past two defenders to slot home past a dejected Sherif Ekramy.
The former Ahly stopper looked at his usual best, making two saves after the opener while Percy Tau went close to making it 2-0 but his long-range effort ten minutes from time whispered past the upright.
Not to be denied a sensational finish, inspirational midfielder Amr El-Solia netted a stunning strike in the 86th minute when his curling effort beat the outstretched arms ofEkramy before Mohamed Sherif’s third in stoppage time.
The win moved Ahly two points ahead of Pyramids with a game in hand as they move immediately to the Cairo International Airport to travel to South Africa – where they are set to face Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
