Wadi Degla SC president Maged Samy has defended Pitso Mosimane, saying if Al Ahly would sack him he’d be a scapegoat of the board’s mistakes around the CAF Champions League final.
Mosimane has been in hot water in the past few days after a poor run of results in the league, winning only one of their last five games, while also losing the CAF Champions League final 2-0 to Wydad Athletic Club.
As a consequence, Mosimane has faced some backlash from Egyptian media and Al Ahly legends, even though the CAFCL final was played at Wydad’s home ground instead of a neutral venue.
Two recent announcements over special meetings with their coach have sent Egyptian media into a frenzy, with speculation growing whether the club could part ways with their coach – even though he’s lifted five trophies over the last 20 months.
‘Jingles’ now received the backing Samy, who blames the Al Ahly board for allowed the CAFCL to be played at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, rather than a neutral venue.
“Mosimane won Al Ahly two Champions League titles, and he led the team to the third consecutive final but he lost it due to management issues,” Samy posted on Facebook, as cited by Kingfut.
“Al Ahly board are the ones responsible for the game being played at their opponents’ home, if they decide to sack Mosimane, he would just be a scapegoat to cover for the board mistakes.”
Al Ahly held a Zoom meeting with Mosimane two days ago to discuss “some points regarding the first team’s preparations for the upcoming period”, but with the 57-year-old being in Morocco to complete his CAF Pro Licence the meeting has been rescheduled to Friday, when he returns to Egypt.
Meanwhile, former Al Ahly coach Juan Carlos Garrido has also come out publicly to state that any Al Ahly must realise they are coming under fire in Egypt, should they not win every trophy on offer.
“Who trains the Al Ahly must accept the requirement to win everything and know how to manage it.
“I have known the big clubs in Cairo and Casablanca, similar passion and pressure. Great experiences that I really enjoyed.”
