Legendary South African coach Pitso Mosimane has predicted a huge future for Saudi Arabian football after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach joined traditional giants Al Ahli SC after his stint in Egypt with Al Ahly – with the mandate to win promotion.
And currently, in second place, it appears inevitable that he will lead them back into the top-flight with the first time asking.
The Saudi Pro League has garnered massive media attention since the 2022 FIFA World Cup where their national team shocked the world by beating eventual champions Argentina in their opening game – with an enterprising style of football.
While most of their national team players are based in their local league, the addition of Ronaldo at Al Nassr could prove to be a masterstroke to develop the league to even greater heights from a global perspective.
“I think the best is yet to come for Saudi football, watch this space, I foresee a lot of top players coming to the Saudi league,” Mosimane said about Ronaldo’s arrival and what it means for the future of their league.
“Saudi league is strong, it’s the best in Asia, the best league in Asia, financial [aspect] also – so yeah that’s where we [Al Ahli] are going, we hope we’ll go there but we believe we will go there, we are working towards that.
“I’m happy to be in Saudi, to be honest, we had a different perception about Saudi but it’s not what we think, Saudi is [a] very good [standard of football].”
Ahli are currently second, one point behind league leaders Al Hazm with ten games remaining – while the top-four all win promotion to the Pro League.
