Orlando Pirates midfielder Miguel Timm has insisted the Buccaneers we will go for the league title next season and close the gap to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Timm said it was their ambition to win the league title this campaign, but it could still be deemed as a successful campaign for the Soweto giants as they face Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup final at Loftus Stadium on Saturday.
It could be Pirates’ second major trophy this season, as they have their hands already on the MTN8, which they won in November last year after beating AmaZulu 1-0 in the final, where Timm was named Man of the Match.
“As much as we are happy with qualifying for the Champions League, one of the targets we set ourselves as a group was to compete for the title,” said Timm.
“The positive we will take is the solid foundation set for the future and we will give it a go next season.
“I’m not saying we are not happy with reaching two cup finals, but we have the capacity to do more.”
Sundowns won the league with a record of seven games to spare, beating Pirates in both league matches, and finished on top with 70 points, 16 ahead of the second-placed Sea Robbers.
But Bucs crushed Sundowns 3-0 in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final, leading to the appointment of coach Rulani Mokwena as sole head coach by Sundowns management.
“I don’t [compare our team to them] and I don’t think any of us have compared ourselves to them,” Timm said about the high standards Downs have set.
“(But) we have set our foundation and the more we improve on what we have done this season, the closer we will get — and time will tell.
“I’m confident the gap will be closed because of the work we have done.
“If we continue to focus on what we are doing and not compare ourselves and our journey to anybody else’s, we will soon be there.”
