Pirates player joins Chiefs with a point to prove

After his surprising move from Bucs to Chiefs, Bongani Sam wants to prove his critics wrong.

Sam, a left-back, was the first player signed by Chiefs during the current PSL window after struggling for game time at Pirates. He spent the last two seasons on loan at Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows.

Some people criticised his move, seeing him as an unwanted Pirates player.

He was signed before Nasreddine Nabi became the new Chiefs coach and recently complained about the quality of some new players.

Despite Chiefs not winning trophies for nine years, Sam is hopeful and ready to help the team return to its former status.

“I want to help the team return to the glory days,” Sam told SuperSport

“It’s not only me, though. I am sure the guys are eager to do the same thing. I am lucky to be part of a group of players who want to take the team back to where it belongs. As a team, we need to stay focused and help each other to achieve anything this season.”

By joining Chiefs, Sam becomes part of a small group of players who have played for all three Soweto teams: Chiefs, Pirates, and Swallows.

This group includes Collins Mbesuma, Siyabonga Nomvethe, Marc Batchelor, and Thabang Lebese.

“It’s an honour for me to be one of the players who have played for all the teams in Soweto. I am very happy and excited. I can’t wait for the season to start,” said Sam.

At Chiefs, Sam will compete with Edmilson Dove for the starting left-back position.
