Orlando Pirates’ 2024/25 CAF Champions League campaign got off to a slow start after Sunday’s 0-0 first preliminary round, first-leg draw with CS Disciples at Cote D’Or National Sports Complex.
The Madagascan side hosted the Buccaneers in Saint Pierre, Mauritius, due to CAF’s condemnation of their football facilities in their home country.
It was an uninspiring afternoon for the Soweto giants against their less-fancied opponents.
Pirates’ performance sparked fear among their fans of another early exit from the Champions League, as witnessed last season following a pre-season camp in Spain and much activity in the transfer market.
A scoring draw during Friday’s second leg at Orlando Stadium saw Pirates eliminated from the continental tournament.
That puts coach Jose Riveiro and his men under pressure to avoid humiliation, especially at home.
On Sunday, Riveiro started regulars including goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Deon Hotto, Monnapule Saleng, Relebohile Mofokeng and Patrick Maswanganyi.
There was no space for new signings Gilberto, Selaelo Rasebotja and defender Deano van Rooyen.
The home side forced Pirates to defend more during the early stages of the contest in what signalled a difficult afternoon for the Soweto giants.
But when Pirates settled and started attacking, they were frustrated by the Disciples’ offside trapping antics.
Mofokeng and Saleng came close to breaking the deadlock towards the end of the first half, and the latter continued to be a major threat after the restart.
Although Pirates then dominated play, with Kabelo Dlamini and Tshegofatso Mabasa getting some good chances, their hosts also had a few threatening moments.
Mabasa was denied by the crossbar on 69 minutes, which was the last clear-cut opportunity for Pirates before the final whistle.
