Pirates coach Ouaddou wants glory for African coaches

Orlando Pirates have made a strong start to the season, sitting atop the Betway Premiership with 35 points from 15 games, three ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.

With 15 games before the champions are crowned, the Buccaneers coach, Ouaddou, could be the first coach to halt Sundowns’ eight-year dynasty.

According to the Moroccan, winning the league with a fully African technical staff would send a message far beyond points and trophies.

ORLANDO PIRATES COACH ABDESLAM OUADDOU ON AFRICAN COACHES

African coaches and backroom teams, in his view, are often underestimated, despite a proven track record of delivering results at the highest level.

“When you’re a coach, you have to be very humble, I have fantastic people around me, African technical staff and we have to mention it,” Ouaddou told journalists.

“My gift, if I can the gift, if at the end of the season, we can win the title with all these African competences. It would be a very strong message to many people who don’t believe in African competencies.

The Orlando Pirates mentor added to say his dream is to push the staff and players to show the continent what they are capable of, adding that Africa often forgets it has people who can deliver at the highest level, especially black professionals.

“It’s my dream to bring these people to the promised land,” he concluded.

NEDBANK CUP ROUND OF 32

In the meantime, Ouaddou’s focus is on domestic football. Orlando Pirates take on ABC Motsepe side Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the Moses Mabhida Stadium at 15:00.
