Pirates close gap on Sundowns, Mbokazi bags another Man of the Match award

Orlando Pirates have closed the gap to Mamelodi Sundowns to 12 points following their 1-0 win over Polokwane City on Saturday afternoon.

A second-half goal from Nkosinathi Sibisi was enough to give the Buccaneers all three points in Polokwane. The win sees Pirates move to 46 points after 20 league games. Should they win their gaps in hand, they could just be three points from the log leaders.

Although the win was scrappy, it was another top-class performance from Bucs youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi. The 19-year-old was awarded Man of the Match for his defending as he helped Orlando Pirates defend a 1-0 lead to close the gap on Sundowns.

Since making his debut earlier this year, Mbokazi has become a fan favourite.

“Another top performance by Mbekezeli Mbokazi, I swear will be in the Bafana Bafana squad for Africa Cup Of Nations this year, share this tweet if you believe in this wall. What a player,” tweeted @PovertykillerB.

“The continuous collection of MOM every game is a sign of a quality player..Mbokazi is having the best season so far ..I’m happy for the boy,” @LizoL12 tweeted.

“Mbokazi is the biggest talent to come out of SA in years. This boy will be the face of our football,” tweeted @mabasotf.

Orlando Pirates will only get another opportunity to close the gap on Sundowns on 20 April. Their next match is midweek against MC Alger of Algeria in the CAF Champions League, followed by another tough encounter in the Nedbank Cup against Marumo Gallants.

Can Pirates still fight for the league?
