South Africa’s Betway Premiership returns to action on Tuesday, October 13, following a two-week FIFA international break, with four matches scheduled at various venues across the country as the battle for league supremacy intensifies.
The spotlight will fall on the country’s football giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, who will be eager to collect maximum points as the race for the Premiership title gathers momentum.
Orlando Pirates will welcome TS Galaxy to the Orlando Stadium, determined to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the MTN8 final to arch-rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers were dethroned as MTN8 champions after Sundowns handed them a 2-0 defeat at the sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.
However, Pirates must quickly put that disappointment behind them and turn their attention to the league campaign, where every point could prove crucial in their quest to reclaim the top position.
The Sea Robbers occupy second place on the league table, trailing leaders Sundowns, who have accumulated 20 points. With the title race heating up, Pirates will be desperate to secure victory against TS Galaxy and keep the pressure on the defending league champions.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs will host Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium, hoping to strengthen their position among the early title contenders.
Amakhosi are currently fourth on the log with 13 points and will be eager to use home-ground advantage to collect maximum points. However, Stellenbosch could prove difficult opponents, meaning Chiefs will need a disciplined and clinical performance to achieve their objective.
The Soweto giants will also be conscious of the importance of consistency if they are to remain within touching distance of the leading teams.
In KwaZulu-Natal, AmaZulu will lock horns with Durban City in a derby that promises plenty of intensity and local pride. The match is billed for Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
AmaZulu occupy third position with 16 points and will be looking to consolidate their place among the leading teams. A victory over their provincial rivals could help them close the gap on the teams above them and strengthen their early-season title ambitions.
However, Durban City will be determined to upset their neighbours and collect valuable points of their own, setting the stage for a fiercely contested encounter.
With the international break behind them, Tuesday’s fixtures offer the leading contenders an opportunity to reset, regain momentum and make an early statement in the Premiership title race.
Kickoff for all these matches is at 7.30pm
