Pirates beat Cádiz as Chiefs suffer defeat in Spain

Orlando Pirates continued their impressive pre-season campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Spanish Segunda Division side Cádiz CF, while rivals Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 2-1 defeat to Elche CF on Saturday night.

Pirates showed great character after falling behind as early as the fourth minute. Ibon Sánchez punished a defensive mistake to hand Cádiz the lead. However, the Buccaneers responded almost immediately. Tsepang Moremi levelled matters in the 11th minute with a superb strike from just outside the penalty area. Moremi was at the heart of Pirates’ turnaround again just before half-time when he set up Daniel Msendami, who calmly finished in the 44th minute to hand the Soweto giants a deserved 2-1 lead.

The Buccaneers held on in the second half to claim an encouraging victory as they continue preparations for the new Betway Premiership season. The result followed Pirates’ opening pre-season match in Spain, where they played to a 1-1 draw against Córdoba CF, with Boitumelo Radiopane scoring a late equaliser.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs ended their Spanish tour with a 2-1 defeat to Elche CF. Amakhosi found themselves trailing 2-0 before Asanele Velebayi produced a moment of brilliance to pull one back. The winger won possession just outside the box, drove past several defenders, and fired an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. Despite the spirited response, Chiefs could not find another goal and suffered their second defeat of the tour, having also lost to Al Khalood earlier in the week.

Chiefs will now return to South Africa to complete their preparations for the start of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season. Pirates will remain in Spain for another week and have three more games still lined up next week as they wrap up their pre-season tour.
