Pirates and Sundowns stars who could become household names at FIFA World Cup 2026

There is no doubt that Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns players will form the core of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad for FIFA World Cup 2026.

All those playing the global spectacle later this year will gain exposure on the grandest stage.

Meaning several top Bucs and Masandawana stars will get the chance to showcase their skills to the world.

I believe these three Bafana Bafana stars have the best chance of catching the eye of overseas-based clubs due to their current form and the key roles they’ll have in the national set-up.

Dominate selection

Given Hugo Broos’ selection pattern over the past few seasons, a few things have become clear.

Firstly, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates players continue to dominate selection in Broos’ side – and rightfully so given their form in the Betway Premiership.

So, which players are most likely to gain international interest? Well, that depends on how they perform at the tournament which kicks off on 11 June.

However, there are certain top stars that are red-hot right now heading into the global showpiece to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.

MOFOKENG TO THE WORLD

Orlando Pirates superstar Relebohile Mofokeng will no doubt be watched closely. The skilful Bucs midfielder has already attracted interest from the Middle East and Europe.

Now, he’s likely to be heading to the World Cup with a point to prove after a disappointing AFCON campaign in Morocco.

Furthermore, he’s in fine form after he was announced as the PSL Player of the Month for January-February.

Also, he has expressed interest in spreading his wings, with a move out of Mayfair very possible after the world sees just how good he really is.

Mofokeng is likely to draw more interest from potential suitors if he has a stand-out World Cup.

SUNDOWNS DUO SET TO STEP UP ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams will have to be at his best when he leads out South Africa at the World Cup. Every save will matter as he looks to extend Bafana Bafana’s stay in the tournament.

Expect him to give 100% – and more.

As a result, bank on him to show the world the hidden gem we have in goal.

He will have his work cut out for him, but is no stranger to big matches following his experience with Mamelodi Sundowns in the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA last year.

The question is: Do South African fans want our captain playing overseas if there is interest in his services

Either way, this is a life-changing opportunity for Williams to lead from the front – from in goal – for Bafana Bafana.

Finally, Teboho Mokoena has the opportunity of a lifetime to elevate his game to the next level.

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is a key cog in the national side.

His trademark long-range shots will keep goalkeepers on their feet.

Mokoena is good enough to draw interest from abroad and the better he performs at the FIFA World Cup, the more interest he will attract.

Which Bafana Bafana player is likely to attract the most foreign interest after FIFA World Cup 2026?
