The 2024 MTN8 tournament starts this weekend with two exciting quarter-final matches on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, defending champions Orlando Pirates face SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium.
Pirates, aiming for their 13th title, are the second most successful team in the competition, behind Kaizer Chiefs, who have won it 15 times.
Chiefs, however, will not compete this year after finishing 10th in the PSL last season.
The excitement continues on Sunday, with Stellenbosch hosting TS Galaxy at the Danie Craven Stadium.
The tournament will pause before returning next weekend, with Sekhukhune United playing Cape Town City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on 10 August.
Last season’s runners-up, Mamelodi Sundowns, will take on Polokwane City at Lucas Moripe Stadium the following day.
All eyes are on Pirates to see if they can win the MTN8 for the third consecutive season under coach Jose Riveiro.
Pirates’ captain Innocent Maela is cautious about their SuperSport United clash.
“We are looking forward to starting the season on a positive note,” Maela said.
“SuperSport United are a very tough side. Matches against them are never easy, and we cannot underestimate them.”
SuperSport United won the MTN8 three times, while Sundowns won it four times.
Cape Town City has one MTN8 crown, while the other teams in this year’s competition have never won.
