A crime operation in Philippi, Cape Town, has led to the arrest of four men, aged 19 to 33, for possession of perlemoen.
The Maitland Flying Squad, along with other police units and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, were involved in the operation.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said the officers searched a location +on Schaap Road and found 3,281 dry perlemoen and 1,359 wet perlemoen worth about R1.4-million.
They also took equipment used for drying perlemoen and three vehicles. The suspects are being held at the Philippi police station and will appear in the Athlone court.
Asavela Ntoyakhe, a resident, believes that stricter sentences could help reduce crime.
She said: “We have people who repeatedly break the law because they know that they will appear in court, get bail, go out, and continue breaking the law.”
In another case, the Maitland Flying Squad arrested a 52-year-old man for having an unlicensed gun and ammunition.
He was found in Browns Farm, a dangerous area of Cape Town, with a pistol and 28 rounds of ammunition. This suspect will also appear in court in Athlone.
