Gayton McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance has placed Kenny Kunene on special leave.

Kunene’s 30-day leave comes after the renowned media socialite and Johannesburg transport MMC was found at the home of the late DJ Sumbody’s suspected killer, Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe, in Sandton at the time of the suspect’s arrest.

His presence has since sparked concerns about their affiliation. However, the politician has denied any wrongdoing and says that he was merely present to assist journalists who were interested in interviewing Molefe for his website, Africa News Global. He remains adamant that he is not friends with the suspect.

“We are not friends. If you look at my online newspaper, it hasn’t been that active, and I decided to put together some young people to resuscitate it. So, they wanted to do an exclusive story, and Mr Molefe was a person where there was an opportunity to do a story,” he explained to the public broadcaster, SABC News.

He added: “Remember that he has not spoken publicly since his arrest and whilst he was on bail, so I facilitated with somebody that I know that knows Mr Molefe and Mr Molefe agreed to do the interview and the meeting was facilitated.”

Kunene claims that his involvement during the time of the arrest is simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The president of the Patriotic Alliance, Gayton McKenzie, has since revealed that Kunene has been removed from participating in all party activities, as they will now conduct a full investigation into the matter.

However, he remains positive that Kunene is innocent.

“I know Kenny Kunene. People think he’s my friend, but he’s not. He was my friend, but he went past that and became a brother I never had. He’s the one person who made me change my life in jail. He’s the godfather of my children. I’m the godfather of his children. He would never get involved with murders. That’s not him. He’s a good man. He would never hurt a fly; he’s not a violent person. I know he’s innocent,” McKenzie explained.
