A man who was accused of committing a crime was killed inside an ambulance when he was attacked by an angry Atteridgeville mob.

According to Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the patient was being treated inside the ambulance and was in a critical condition.

EMS personnel came under fire by the mob too who refused to allow the man to receive treatment. The unidentified victim was already in a critical condition when paramedics arrived on scene in Mshongoville informal settlement, Atteridgeville.

After stabilising the patient, the EMS were preparing to leave to take the patient to hospital for further treatment but were attacked with the angry Atteridgeville mob who threw rocks at the ambulance.

Even with a police escorting paramedics into the area to treat the patient, the mob still managed to barricade the road, making it difficult for the ambulance to leave.

The incident has been condemned with officials saying mob justice is not the answer or solution to socio-economic issues.

Gauteng Department of Health also slammed the incident, saying it was unfortunate that two EMS personnel were also injured in the attack.

“Attacks on health personnel have dire consequences as they make it difficult for them to discharge the constitutional mandate to provide access to healthcare services.”

Both EMS personnel who were attacked went for medical observation at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital and will be attending counselling sessions.

Police say they are investigating the incident and a case of murder has been opened, the search for suspects are also underway.
