On Saturday, April 23, Eastern Cape police arrested a 31-year-old suspect in connection with a rape that allegedly occurred in September 2021. The accused is thought to be a pastor.
The pastor was arrested in Sugarbush, Mount Ayliff, at midday on Saturday, according to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.
“The information suggests that the victim was at home with young children during the day when the alleged Pastor of the local church arrived asking for the parents.
“The report further indicates that he left and returned again in the evening and stayed until late when other children had gone to sleep,” said Kinana.
In September 2021, after the other children in the home had gone to bed, the pastor allegedly raped the 16-year-old girl.
At the time, the victim did not report the incident to anyone. The suspect’s arrest, according to the police, is the result of an ongoing investigation. On rape charges, he is scheduled to appear in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 25.
“The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has hailed the sterling work and commitment of the Police in Mount Ayliff, for their unwavering determination to eliminate the culture of Gender-Based Violence in the Alfred Nzo District,” said the police spokesperson.
