Four family members were shot inside their home at the Marikana informal settlement in Cape Town on Sunday night.

A woman living nearby said she heard gunshots.

“I had just arrived home when I heard the shots. I hid under the table because I was afraid of being hit by a stray bullet. It felt like a scene from a movie,” she said.

After the gunfire stopped, she heard neighbours shouting that a couple and their two children had been shot.

Both parents died at the scene. The children were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

“When I got to the house, the parents were already dead,” said the woman.

“We couldn’t do anything for them. The suspects wanted to kill the whole family. We’re still shocked. We don’t know why this happened.”

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said a 46-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were shot dead, while two boys, aged six and 17, were taken to hospital.

“The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and the suspects haven’t been caught yet. Philippi East detectives are investigating two murder cases and two attempted murder cases,” Twigg said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
