Outrage after Cape Town teen raped

A Cape Town community is reeling from the rape of a 16-year-old pupil.

The girl was attacked while on her way to school in Bellville South on 12 September.

In response, pupils from surrounding schools staged a protest, calling on parents, police, and safety groups to do more to protect them.

A suspect has been arrested and is in police custody.

The 16-year-old was attacked and raped while walking to her Bellville South high school earlier this month.

The incident has rocked the community.

Pupils have made their voices heard, saying what happened is unacceptable.

Those who must walk to school are demanding action from police and the community.

Community leaders say they understand residents’ anger. But they ask that people not circulate fake news on social media that could incite vigilante attacks.

The Community Policing Forum and ward councilor are in talks with SAPS to work on a safety plan going forward.

The police’s Family Violence, Child Protection, and S.e.xual Offences Unit is investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, Western Cape education MEC David Maynier has urged anyone with information to contact SAPS.

He says attacks on children are unacceptable and counseling is being provided to the affected pupil.
